GNSS-R-SAR Concept

I have proposed the Innovative SAR concept usign the GNSS-R signal. This approach utilize a phased array and the precise phase history of the signal to generate a high-resolution image improving the current resolution by over 10x.

Resolution and Data Coverage

Using the Scattering signal from the Glistening Zone and the synthetic aperture created by the platform motion, The GNSS-R-SAR can achieve much higher spatial resolution compared to the radiometer mode. The Swath is much larger to allow more data coverage within the same amount of time.
This method utilize the precise phase history of the signal to generate a reconstructed reference signal for match filtering.

Sparsed Array Processing

One issue with the GNSS-R is the delay doppler ambiguity. Limited by it's forward looking geometry, the image would have a "ghost point" . To mitigate this issue, the sparse array signal processing technique is introduced to perform digital beam steering capability to remove the ambiguity point.

First In-space Demonstration of the Concept

In 2018, two CYGNSS satellites have a close encounter spacing a few km apart. Creating an idea situation for the demonstration of the concept, current work is to process this data to demonstrate the feasibility of the concept and algorithm.
